Shop Local Philadelphia: 3rd Street, Old City
Everyone says that handmade gifts are the best because they come from the heart. But if you don't have time to create a gift from the heart, shopping local might just be the best next best thing. Yesterday I shared one of my favorite shopping streets in Philly: North 2nd Street in Northern Liberties. That street is chock full of shops for gifts, home decor, and vintage shopping. Now if you go about half a mile (if that) to your south, you'll encounter Third street and even more places to shop.
Third street is one of the major arteries in the Old City section of the city. Old City is where you find your historic sites, plenty of tourists, ice cream shops, and great dining. Third street is part of the hustle and bustle but in a different way. You can stroll the street and pop in to a bunch of unique boutiques or take a minute to relax in an art gallery. It's another great shop local spot in Philly.
Art in the Age of Mechanical Production, 116 N. 3rd Street
If you've ever wanted to go to the source of some of the best liquor, you'll find it when you enter Art in the Age. Besides providing the backbone for delicious cocktails, Art in the Age has great clothing brands, lots of small gift items that are handmade and unique, and a Warby Parker boutique. Some of my favorite gift items in the store (besides their signature Root liquor) is their wool socks and felt pennants.
Never Too Spoiled, 57 N. 3rd Street
This women's clothing and accessories boutique has the crammed and cozy charm of your big sister's closet. You'll definitely find a little kitschy gift for your younger sister or cousin and surprisingly something for you too. There are plenty of scarves and little prints and sparkly things.
Philadelphia Independents, 35 N. 3rd Street
You can shop really local at Philadelphia Independents: they feature all local brands! It's like walking into a real live Etsy store and every single item is on going to go on your want-it list. They have great Philadelphia items made by Philly artisans and there are great handmade jewelry items. All my friends who are having babies next year are getting some of their adorable and quirky onesies. But for now I'm asking for the "Thug Life" floral print because, why not?
Jonathan Adler, 33 N. 3rd Street
Okay, this might be stretching the limits of shopping local but you know you want to go into the Jonathan Adler boutique. This is the perfect place to shop for your mom or that really picky friend who would die to have something designer.
North Third Collective, 21 N. 3rd Street
Scout Salvage closed in October to make way for a new endeavor: North Third Collective. The tiny space packs a ton in with different well-known vintage vendors like Hoof and Antler and Fresh Vintage. It also packs in a whole lot of great vintage finds, from clothing to home decor to Pennsylvania brands. If you've always wanted to sniff the blogger favorite Candelles candles before purchasing, you can find them tucked away on the N. Third Collective shelves. I'm all in for their Santa's Cookies holiday candle!
Even if you're not in the Philadelphia area, I hope I inspire you to shop locally this holiday season. It is so important that we support our neighbors and our community by purchasing from small businesses. Even one present purchased at a local boutique makes all the difference. Happy holidays and may you find everything you're shopping for in the next few weeks!
