What I Wore: To a Conference

Can I tell you something? I love conferences. Lots of people complain about having to spend all day at a conference but I LOVE IT. Maybe it's the teacher in me (it's probably the teacher in me) but I love learning things. Whether it's something completely new or how to improve what I do or to meet new people, conferences are the place to be. Usually my conferences have to do with teaching but two weeks ago I got to do something for the other part of my life: I went to the Blog Connect conference to learn more about better blogging.

The Blog Connect was the first (hopefully annual!) conference organized by my favorite group of bloggers, the PHLBloggers. Some of the stellar sessions were content organization by Melissa and Sarah, story mapping by Julie, and monetizing your blog by Bekah. There were so many amazing sponsors with the biggest being Saxby's Coffee which allowed us to meet in their gorgeous corporate space with free coffees, lattes, and more all day.

While I could find all sorts of information online about what I might expect from a blogging conference, there wasn't a guide on what to wear. My usual everyday outfit is a mix of professional and utilitarian because you never know when an errant glue stick might catch you. But the blog conference was a little bit out of the ordinary so the outfit had to match. After trying on several outfits and finally settling on my bright and bold combo above, I figured out some tips that might help you at your next conference.

What to Wear to a Conference

  1. Start off by being comfortable. Your top priority when dressing for any conference, work or otherwise, should be comfort. Most conferences are a full day thing and your time is spent between sitting and listening and standing and networking. Breathable cottons will keep you cool and heels are okay if you're not walking a ton, though I love a pair of chic and effortless flats.
  2. Dress in layers. Layers are literally my favorite fashion subject to discuss (#nerd). As a perpetually chilly lady, a cardigan is usually stuffed in my bag somewhere. Blazers are the perfect layering piece for a conference: professional but on trend. Color makes a great statement and can show off your personality but a fitted black or navy style is just as stylish.
  3. Make sure you have pockets. My leather bucket bag is my right arm and, on the day of the conference, I stuffed it full of pens and business cards. However, there was no way I could drag it around while I was talking it up with other blogger babes. And when you're networking, you need business cards and sometimes you'll also want a pen. So, yes, pockets.
  4. Be yourself. Walking into the blog conference, I stopped to talk to the fabulous organizer, Chrystina. She commented that my neon and pink look was bright but it looked like me. Another blogger mentioned at the evening happy hour that she was sure I was a fashion and lifestyle blogger because of my ensemble. Someone else said she was happy to see me in my natural state. Sometimes talking and networking and telling your story is hard. Using my clothes, I was able to share who I was and what I stood for without saying a word. Your outfit can be the perfect way to show people what you're all about.

The Blog Connect conference was a blast and I'm already making plans to attend next year. If you have a passion for something, blogging or otherwise, I highly recommend you attend a conference. It's the perfect way to learn more, meet new people, and share your story and your style with others.
