Twenty Nine Lessons For Style and Life

Today is the day I am turning twenty-nine years old. I never imagined life after 25 really. There were ideas about a job, a family, a house, a little bit of travel. But 29 seemed like a long way off. Now here I am, the same age as my mom when she had me. With no expectations for hitting the last year of my twenties, there are a lot of possibilities. Who knows what this next year will hold; I haven't been able to predict what will happen any other year. What I do know is what I've learned in the last 29 years. If you pay attention, you can learn a lot from just getting dressed in the morning. You learn even more when you travel outside of your comfort zone. So today, on my 29th birthday, I'm sharing with you twenty-nine things I've learned over the years.

Twenty Nine Lessons for Style and Life // what I've learned about great style and good living in twenty nine years

  1. Black and white is chic, effortless, and a crowd pleaser.
  2. You don't always have to please everyone: wear pink and red. Feel powerful and unique.
  3. Don't wait for a special occasion to wear something special. Every day is special so put on that sparkly statement necklace and do what you want.
  4. Say yes to patterns. Even if you're afraid you'll stand out. People will love it.
  5. If you're not comfortable, change it. Don't feel like you look beautiful in what you "should" be wearing? Wear what you love. Don't love your job? Start hustling to change that. Not in love anymore? It will hurt a  lot, like a whole lot, but you can change it. Change is hard but you'll be happier in the end.
  6. 95% of any outfit is confidence. Most things require confidence. Give yourself a pep talk and fake it until you make it.
  7. Find a color that makes you happy and wear it. Sometimes being happy is complicated so hold on to the simple things that make you smile.
  8. Don't let your style define you. You want to look like a punk rocker on Saturday and a brunch queen on Sunday? Do it. Don't put yourself in a box and feel confined.
  9. Always paint your toenails for sandal season.
  10. Find accessories that mean something to you. Sometimes all you need is to look down at your wrist to remember that you are special.
  11. Clothing is the best souvenir. Wear your memories.
  12. If you can't stop thinking about it, you should probably buy it. Unless it's going to make you broke or break your principles. But otherwise, go for it.
  13. Wear high heels, even if you're tall. Don't let other people tell you how to be. High heels will make you feel sexy, confident, and you can look down on all those people who try to talk you down.
  14. Don't waste your money on cheap imitations; save up for the real thing. Sometimes waiting is hard and fast fashion is fun. There's nothing wrong with that. But sometimes it takes awhile for quality to come along. Don't give up hope.
  15. You can never have too many cardigans.
  16. Don't be so serious; it's okay to break the rules. This is your life and you make the rules. Just watch out for the law and the worst dressed list.
  17. You will make mistakes and it won't be pretty. The skirt will be too tight and the color will be all wrong. It happens. Move on.
  18. When you find a designer who makes clothes that you love and that make you feel like a million bucks, stick with it.
  19. You will not look good in everything. Wide-legged cropped pants are not for everyone. That's okay, keep looking.
  20. Ponytails are elegant, timeless, and chic...unless it's in a scrunchie.
  21. You will not like the same thing in five, ten, or even two years down the road. We change. We explore. We grow. That's what makes life amazing. Some day you'll have to say goodbye to the Victoria's Secret sweatpants or the on-and-off again friend-with-benefits. It's good to grow up.
  22. Budget shouldn't keep you from creating a style you love. A little extra effort and you'll look and feel fabulous even if you can't afford a single one of those beautiful Club Monaco dresses.
  23. Trends are fun but classics are there for a reason. Enjoy the moment but don't forget about the long term. Choose clothing, friendships, things that last.
  24. You don't have to match but you do have to go together. A matching top and bottom is fun but you don't have to be so strict. Mix it up a bit. However, don't forget that there's an elegance and ease to things that go together.
  25. Simple is best.
  26. Comfort is king.
  27. Being revealing isn't sexy. Mystery goes a long way. You don't need to show off a lot of skin or share every minute of your life for someone to like, or even love, you.
  28. Just because it looks good on the model or bad on the hanger doesn't mean it's not for you. Try everything once.
  29. Wear what makes you happy. This is your life. Do what you love.
