Quick Philly Trip: New Liberty Distilling

Weekend road trips are great. Big vacations are even better. But until I win the lottery, road trips and vacations don't happen all the time. That's why I'm all about the quick trip or mini adventure. Two weekends ago, I took a five hour trip to Pittsburgh which was fun but this weekend it was great to drive 30 minutes to Philly. This weekend's perfect quick trip was to explore a new craft distillery in Philly: New Liberty Distilling in Kensington. Quick Philly Trip: New Liberty Distillery

Craft distilleries are popping up all over the city. While before it was grabbing a pint at the newest craft brewery, now it's sipping something a bit stronger. I am not a liquor girl (#roséallday) but if mixed into the perfect cocktail, well, it's just perfect. Even if you're not a whiskey straight up kind of person, almost all distilleries have a bar to serve up their spirits in delicious ways. Bonus is that they tend to be pretty instagram-worthy.

New Liberty Distillery is located in the Kensington neighborhood in the former stables of the Crane Arts Building. That's the first thing that made me excited to visit. I have a thing for visiting re-purposed spaces. Why build new when you can reuse? New Liberty didn't disappoint. Their barrel/bottling room is the second floor stables. They kept many of the original iron hooks and many of the old wood-and-iron stalls.

New Liberty has several different brands: Kinsey, New Liberty, and Maryland Heritage. They make everything from rye to malt whiskey. But if you're asking me to explain the difference, you're just going to have to wait to take a tour yourself. Tours are given every hour on the hour and you get a tasting of four different types of whiskey. Though if you're adverse to whiskey, you can try to bargain your way into a cocktail instead. Spoiler: I was pretty successful.

While New Liberty is not a bar to say, it's a really fun place to gather with friends over the weekend. Take a tour, sip a cocktail, and just relax in the upstairs tasting room. If you go, I definitely recommend the Thunder cocktail!
