Why a Cropped Top is Your Best Friend
Here's the one thing you should know about me: I'm an old lady at heart. Maybe it was those first post-college years working at an assisted living that started it but I'm pretty sure my old lady-ness has always been in there. I get annoyed by crowds of "young people" (anyone younger than 25 who is being "rowdy), I hate going out after 8pm or in the rain, and I let Nick know that I am going to be watching "my shows". Albeit I'm more into Pretty Little Liars than Murder She Wrote. My other old lady tendency happens to be when it comes to fashion. While I don't wear matching sweater sets (yet), I do prefer to be a bit more covered and conservative. But you see, I also fell desperately in love with the cropped top trend.
Cropped tops are amazing because they are kinda like a crop top but longer. Some would argue that they're the same thing but hear me out: cropped tops fall just a bit above the hips and might flash a bit of skin. Crop tops hit at around the waist and flash a significant amount of midriff. Yes, I said midriff, as old ladies do. Cropped tops can also be loose and airy and are the perfect top for summer. And it's a fresh and fun and definitely not old lady-ish.
When I spied this pink ruffled gorgeous cropped top on the rack at Anthropologie, I knew I had to have it. It didn't take long for me to want to wear it all the time. While it is on the longer size for a cropped top, it still has that flirty length hitting just at my hips.
Here are some of my favorite ways to wear the cropped top:
With high-waist shorts
Two years ago I was dying for a pair of high waist shorts and could only find one pair that I hated. Now, stroll into any old store and they have at least a pair or two. High-waist shorts and cropped tops are a match made in heaven.
With skinny jeans
The blouse-y fit of this top means that it is more boxy than fitted. To me that's the best part. A cropped top looks great with skinny jeans because of its loose fitting shape contrasting with fitted denim. Just be ready for possibly sharing a little peep of skin. Oh my!
With a fitted pencil skirt
Again, the boxy shape of a cropped top works well when paired with all things fitted. Dress it up for work by throwing it over a fitted pencil skirt. Wouldn't this pink look perfect with this fringey take on the classic pencil skirt?
Another thing to love about cropped tops is that they usually look good with or without interesting details. The ruffles and the button up back basically put this top over the top, so to speak. But the plain cropped top is just as good, like this plain white number I wear ALL the time.
So, despite taking my Earl Grey in the afternoon, I think the cropped top is perfect for me. That is to say: even if you like to be a bit more "conservative" it's always possible to find something that will fit the way you want and to still be on trend. And who knows, sweater sets may make a comeback and I'll probably be totally on board.
