What I'm Stocking Up On For Fall (+ a giveaway!)

With every new season I find myself doing a quick closet clean out. It's such a necessity to take a quick peek into my closet as we switch from one season to another. First of all, I can see what items are too well-loved and might need to be retired. Then I look for things that are "one season-ers", things that really only work in one season or another. Those get boxed up. I also look for those items that can be mixed into a new season (more how I style items for more than one season coming up on Friday!). Finally, there's the fun part: identify what I need and want to add to my closet for the fall. Those items become what I'm stocking up on for fall.

Let's start with what I need to buy. These are my tried-and-true favorites, the things that always get the most wear, and the things that are most likely to end up in the "well-loved" pile when I clean out my closet. Here are the things I can't live without for the fall:

Tunic sweaters

Every year I invest in a few different tunic sweaters. I love these because they're long enough to wear with leggings or skinny jeans and cover your behind. But you can also do a simple front tuck to kick the cool factor up a notch.

Long cardigans

Another one of my most loved items and seriously the best investment ever is always the long cardigan. I live in layers and, with this up and down weather, you probably do too. So I'm constantly throwing on a long cardigan as I step out the door. Whether you get it in a neutral color or go for a little pattern, it's up to you. Or get both, I guarantee you'll wear them.

Blanket scarves

Just like a long cardigan, blanket scarves are the perfect throw-on piece for the fall. Drape it over your shoulders, wrap it around your neck, cover yourself in it: it's one big blanket in scarf form. My favorite thing to do is to wrap it around my shoulders when it's only kinda cold out. Or bring it on those cold airplane trips. Lucky for you there are so many choices out there for great blanket scarves.

Besides those most loved fall items, I'm looking to add a few new things. They might not be the most "fashionable" thing but they're definitely on my radar as good investments.

Thermal shirts

I always used to buy thermal shirts for Nick and was like, these look comfortable, but manly. Then I was perusing thredup last winter and stumbled upon a Free People thermal tee and the rest is history. They are so soft, the texture makes it interesting to mix in with sweaters and jeans, and did I mention that they are the comfiest thing ever?

Maybe my old age is showing but I'm getting very into leisure wear. I'm obsessed with joggers and just ordered this pair from Aerie. Mostly it's the feeling that I just want to be insanely comfy and never leave my house once the cold weather actually starts. However, I do draw the line at track suits.

Ponchos and Capes

Similar to blanket scarves, capes are a fall weather must. They're the perfect alternative to wearing a full coat. Are you sensing a theme with my fall weather outwear? If you can throw it on, I'll take it.

I will forever be trying to make legwarmers come back. The last few years I kind of forgot about how awesome this totally unnecessary accessory is. Not this year! I'm about to stock up on all the legwarmers. Why you ask? Well, they just add something extra to your outfit. Now, you're probably not going to leave the house with them on (props to you if you do) but they're just kind of fun to wear around the house. And legwarmers are surprisingly warmer than you think.

Another "fun" item I'm going to add more of to my closet this year is socks. Of course I have socks but they're utility socks. Boring athletic socks and cheap socks to wear with my boots in the winter. Whatever happened to fun socks? How about cozy socks? How could you not stock up on socks for the fall?

And because fall shopping, socks, and getting cozy all make me happy, I decided to giveaway a whole box of cozy!

Standard Merchandising Co., a sock merchandiser based right here in New Jersey, sent me some of their best and coziest socks and I can't wait to pass them on to one lucky reader! Plus, I'm including some of my other favorites that help me get cozy as the weather gets colder.
