Five Essentials To Get You Through the End of Winter
Anyone else get a little excited by that shot of spring this week? It was all sunshine and cherry blossoms and sandals. But, as it goes this time of year, it's just a little taste of what's to come and there is still a long way to go before the warm weather sticks.
But can I tell you: I saw way too many photos of people in dresses and cut-offs and tank tops. Did we forget that it's still February and the groundhog promised six more weeks of winter?
Really this is the time of year when getting dressed gets a bit trickier. You're standing in front of your closet wondering whether to reach for a dress, whether to add tights, or do you just go with another sweater?
I'm totally with you there. This week alone I wore a heavy winter coat, a skirt with tights, and just a t-shirt with no coat at all. I really, really feel you with this weather confusion.
There's nothing I hate more than taking forever getting ready when I have places to go. But there are a few things that are the best at bridging this weird end-of-winter weather that's all over the place.
Turtlenecks: the nemesis of my childhood uniform wearing life and now my one true adult love (sorry, Nick). I simply adore turtlenecks, especially this winter (real evidence here and here). As we get into slightly warmer temps, you don't have to give them up. Tissue turtlenecks, cotton that feels light like a tissue, are the perfect way to give a nod to winter but won't have you sweating.
Deep down I know it's weird to pay money for jeans that have big holes in the knees. Honestly, it's probably my dad's voice in my head asking me whether I pulled them out of the trash. But I love them, practicality be damned. I'm currently coveting this pair from Levi's (kinda hoping to find a deal on them because, yea, I see my dad's point on that price tag).
Anyone else SO over boots? I love my trusty boots that got me through the snow, cold, hail, rain, and all the weather. Now it's time to let the ankles breath! But let's not get too crazy; it is not mules and sandals time just yet. The next best thing are the perfect pair of ankle boots and let me tell you, they can deal with all sorts of spring weather and go with everything.
Layering pieces: duster cardigans, vests, and funky kimonos
You have to be a crazy person to not love layers. Or you're just really warm all the time. Not so over here. This time of year I'm wrapped in more layers than an onion. Now, there are a ton of options and you could basically go broke buying every cute layer you see. Instead invest in three really good, versatile layers to last you until you can break free and bare your arms in the sunshine. I don't know where I would be without my trusty J.Crew Factory vest which basically never leaves my side in the spring and fall. But my current craving is fun, flowy, funky kimono. Feeling those 70's vibes a ton right now.
When the weather is positively freezing in the morning and then slightly warmer by the afternoon, again, layers are queen. And what better to layer than a simple white blouse? It's definitely an understated addition to your end-of-winter, almost spring closet because it can go with anything. Under a sweater, over a tee, or tied up at the bottom, the possibilities are endless. Actually, a perfect white blouse is on every essential list for every season forever and ever.
