A Visit to the Herbary at Bear Creek Farm in Howell, NJ

One of the things I promised myself about the second summer in our home is that we would not let our outside space go to waste. Growing up in New Jersey was full of hot summer days reading under shady trees and nights watching the fireflies in the twilight. I always envisioned summers being just as magical in our own home.

When we bought our home, I was determined to have as inviting of an outside space as our inside one. I'm lucky we have a small porch on the side and a big backyard with mature trees. It is also full of overgrown weeds, out-of-control bushes, and random patches of dirt.

My goal this summer is to make our outdoor space an oasis. With a lofty goal and needing inspiration, I thought about driving all the way over to Terrain in Glen Mills, a spot I'm always inspired by. But after a little Instagram digging, I found my very own garden heaven right here in New Jersey: The Herbary at Bear Creek Farm

Located right off I-195 in Howell, NJ, it's like a sweet roadside cottage mixed with a dream garden. I knew it was going to be good when we pulled up to the big wood-shingled house that serves as their retail space.

In addition to the house/retail space, there are little areas all over the property to make shopping for plants feel dreamy and comfortable. We parked in the back and immediately saw the big chicken coop full of real, live, fluffy chickens. A little farther back is a bunny hutch. It's not a farm but I cannot resist shopping with alongside bunnies and chickens.

Of course I was trying to focus on picking out plants and not get lost in the little bakery or try to buy a $500 wicker hanging chair. It was really, really hard, guys. Oh, and did I mention the gorgeous earrings, wall of beautiful coffee table books, and all the pretty succulent arrangements?

But I did pick up an amazing selection of herbs and flowers. I plan to put the potted herbs on our porch since it gets the most sun and it'll be fragrant and lush. Also so I can have easy access to the mojito mint for summer cocktails.

The Herbary is a place you feel like you can wander around for hours, despite it's small size. Everyone was so nice, the selection was amazing, and the inspiration was everywhere. If you find yourself near the Central Jersey shore this summer, stop by and smell the roses.
