Another Adventure: Maryland's Eastern Shore
For me there's something about going to the beach. I could go any time of the year and finagled a trip to the beach as me and my boyfriend's second anniversary trip. Our anniversary falls on the second to last weekend of October which, thankfully, just happened to be right before most hotels at the beach start to close for the winter season. Last year we went to Gloucester, MA and stayed in a B&B looking out to the water. This year we chose Ocean City, MD that is crazy during the on-season but was nice and quiet when we rolled in. So quiet in fact that when we woke up Monday morning, it looked like most of our hotel was vacant. Here's what we did at the beach in October:
We started our adventures in Rehoboth Beach, DE mostly because of what you see above: The Dogfish Head restaurant. It is no secret that the boy and I love to try different beers and we were excited to drink some of Delaware's best brews. While you can go on a brewery tour in Milton, DE, we chose to head to Rehoboth for lunch at their really cool restaurant. Pretty much all of the items on their menu are made with local ingredients and they have a big emphasis on sustainability. And they have a ton of their most delicious beers on draft, what could be better? We got a flight of beers and they were so unique and delicious, a return trip is in order.
One of my favorite things about our trip was staying right on the boardwalk with a room overlooking the beach. It was so beautiful to see the sun over the water in the morning. It was so peaceful and quiet in Ocean City with everything closed, even though I was sad about not getting to ride on any rides. Still got to challenge Nick in Skeeball though!
Another great part of our trip was experiencing everything the Eastern Shore had to offer. I finally got to see the wild ponies on Assateague Island and the Misty of Chincoteague sculpture, a childhood dream! You also can't visit Maryland and not eat tons of seafood and we definitely didn't miss out. Thanks to Waterman's Seafood Market for being a fabulous place to eat and one of the only really good seafood places still open in October. You can't beat fresh Maryland crabs being poured onto your table! We also explored everywhere on lots of tiny roads, even encountering a ferry in the middle of nowhere.
Chincoteague Island was home to some pretty cool eateries including Mister Whippy's, a drive-thru ice cream shop. Awesomeness!
A special anniversary trip would not be complete without a friendly mini golf match at one of Ocean City's wacky mini golf courses!
It was a truly amazing weekend and felt like a real getaway even though we only traveled three hours. I am so lucky to have found a wonderful guy to share my life with and every day feels just as fun and as wonderful as the first night we met. It makes me so happy each and every day to know that I have him in my life. And having someone to get away to Ocean City with doesn't hurt either!
